St. James projects
St. James Primary School Project We are currently raising funds for guttering and the purchase of a 2500 litre Jojo tank for the local primary school. There is currently no access to water at the school. Toilets are of the ‘long drop’ nature with nowhere to wash hands and with the children playing, eating, working, and visiting the loo without ever washing their hands during the course of the day, we feel that a step-up in hygiene is much needed. Touching Tiny Lives Project (new-born – 2years of age) We support this existing project by collecting baby clothes, toys, baby food and accessories for the sick and abandoned babies in the care of the Touching Tiny Lives Organisation. St Peter's Creche Project (2 - 8 years of age) We collect toddlers clothing, toys and educational games for the crèche. We are also currently raising funds to build and furnish a new classroom for this over-crowded crèche. The crèche is operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph and supports the extended Mokhotlong area. There are currently over 150 children occupying 2 classrooms with a combined area of less than 40 square metres. Arts & Crafts Project We support and encourage the growth of arts & crafts within the community by providing an annual workshop where a ladies art & craft club from Pietermaritzburg teach the local people skills and offer them an opportunity to earn a living by using their hands and imagination. Any donations of beads, wire, and craft tools are very much appreciated. St. James High School Project We collect magazines and a variety of books for the library and for projects. The school has put a Sports Committee together to take ‘ownership’ and accountability for the introduction of Olympic sports and traditional / indigenous games at the school. We now need to raise funds for the purchase and installation of courts / fields / equipment in order to make such sports available. Tourism Awareness Project This is to be done in stages at the St. James High School and will cover the South African Unit Standards for Nature, Culture and Adventure Guiding. The aim of this project is to teach the teenagers of Lesotho all aspects relating to tourism on an introductory level so they can see the benefits of tourism and how they can fit into it. We plan to create a Tourism and Entrepreneurship workshop to also educate the locals about tourism and its benefits, and to encourage them to be proud of their heritage and assist them to establish sustainable tourism related initiatives. St. James Mission Support We support the Sisters of St. Joseph by collecting clothing, bedding, medical accessories and basic food items, as well as financially supporting the ‘home-based care’ project for the disabled and sick in the outlying villages of the Mokhotlong Region. Donations are used for medical supplies and specialised equipment which is used / dispersed by the ‘Sisters’ of St Joseph’ who operate the ‘home-based care’ project, as well as the ‘Under 5 clinic’.
