What to do at St. James:

With a guide

  1. Tour of the Church and Mission – R10pp
  2. Cultural Village visit and talk – R30pp
  3. Pony Trekking – R60 + (dependant on numbers and route)

Without a guide

  1. Sehonghong River tubing (ideal picnic sites under the Willows) – R30 tube hire for the day
  2. Rafolatsane Mountain hike – recommend hiking boots
  3. Mokhotlong town visit – 3rd world so avoid meat and dairy

Bring your own gear

  1. Cycle – jeep and goat tracks or the main roads
  2. Bike, Quad or 4x4 – lots of rock and gravel. Permission must first be gained (ask host).
  3. Climb / abseil – nothing bolted but plenty anchors in a gorge full of potential
  4. Kayak / raft – November to March. The Senqu River can rise metres in minutes in a mountain storm !
  5. Fly fishing – Linakaneng River is best. Permission must be gained from the chief in areas close to villages.

 

What to bring with to St. James:

  1. Cooler box with dry ice or ice bricks
  2. Meat & charcoal if you wish to braai
  3. Towel and toiletries
  4. Torch or mobile lamp
  5. Binoculars and camera
  6. Hiking boots if you enjoy walking / hiking
  7. Bicycle, motorbike or ATV and then ask the host for advice on routes
  8. Tracksuit pants or stretchy jeans for pony trekking
  9. Cash – no cheques or credit cards will be accepted in most places
  10. Extra fuel as often the towns don’t have any for weeks
  11. Old clothing, childrens toys, books and blankets to donate to the local Mission, Touching Tiny Lives or to the Red Cross
