What to do at St. James:
With a guide …
- Tour of the Church and Mission – R10pp
- Cultural Village visit and talk – R30pp
- Pony Trekking – R60 + (dependant on numbers and route)
Without a guide …
- Sehonghong River tubing (ideal picnic sites under the Willows) – R30 tube hire for the day
- Rafolatsane Mountain hike – recommend hiking boots
- Mokhotlong town visit – 3rd world so avoid meat and dairy
Bring your own gear …
- Cycle – jeep and goat tracks or the main roads
- Bike, Quad or 4x4 – lots of rock and gravel. Permission must first be gained (ask host).
- Climb / abseil – nothing bolted but plenty anchors in a gorge full of potential
- Kayak / raft – November to March. The Senqu River can rise metres in minutes in a mountain storm !
- Fly fishing – Linakaneng River is best. Permission must be gained from the chief in areas close to villages.
What to bring with to St. James:
- Cooler box with dry ice or ice bricks
- Meat & charcoal if you wish to braai
- Towel and toiletries
- Torch or mobile lamp
- Binoculars and camera
- Hiking boots if you enjoy walking / hiking
- Bicycle, motorbike or ATV and then ask the host for advice on routes
- Tracksuit pants or stretchy jeans for pony trekking
- Cash – no cheques or credit cards will be accepted in most places
- Extra fuel as often the towns don’t have any for weeks
- Old clothing, childrens toys, books and blankets to donate to the local Mission, Touching Tiny Lives or to the Red Cross
